India Aims to Host the 2036 Olympics: Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya Announces Vision at Isha Gramotsavam

India is set to make a historic leap in the world of sports by aspiring to host the 2036 Summer Olympic Games, announced Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya during the grand finale of the 17th edition of Isha Gramotsavam held recently in Coimbatore. The declaration marks a significant milestone in India’s sporting journey, reflecting the nation’s ambition to become a key player on the global sports stage.

 

A Milestone for Indian Sports

Addressing a gathering attended by over 63,000 participants, including women athletes from more than 35,000 villages spanning six states and one Union Territory, Minister Mandaviya underscored the Olympics as a transformational event that would elevate Indian sports to new heights. “The 2036 Olympics will be hosted by India, and that will be a milestone for Indian sports,” he said, emphasizing how the event would showcase India's technological prowess and world-class sporting infrastructure to the global community.

 

He noted the crucial role of identifying and nurturing talent from rural areas, highlighting that "legends are born in the soil of villages" and stressed the government's commitment to collaborating with organizations like the Isha Foundation to tap into this vast talent pool.

 

Ahmedabad: The Front-Runner for Hosting

India’s bid centers around Ahmedabad, where a state-of-the-art sports complex, the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave, is under development. The enclave encompasses multi-sport venues designed to meet Olympic standards, supported by the government’s vision to establish world-class facilities. The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad has already been identified as a potential venue for the Olympics’ opening ceremony.

 

This bid is already backed by key figures including Home Minister Amit Shah and Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, who have actively promoted Ahmedabad as the ideal host city. The government estimates the event could cost upwards of $7.5 billion, aiming to generate significant socio-economic benefits and foster innovation.

 

International and Institutional Support

India's ambition has attracted international support, notably from France. During a state visit in January 2024, French President Emmanuel Macron pledged assistance, offering to share expertise from Paris’s experience hosting the 2024 Summer Olympics. This collaboration aims to strengthen India’s organizational capacities and chances of winning the bid.

 

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA), led by President P.T. Usha, has formalized the bid with a Letter of Intent submitted to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in late 2024. The Mission Olympic Cell of the Sports Authority of India has proposed the inclusion of traditional Indian sports such as yoga, kabaddi, and kho-kho, along with widely popular sports like chess, T20 cricket, and squash.
