India Bans Ashwagandha Leaf Products Over Health Risks

Ashwagandha, long celebrated in Ayurveda as a wellness wonder, faces new regulatory restrictions. The government’s directive aims to ensure consumer safety while preserving the herb’s therapeutic benefits through controlled use of its root.  

Ban On Leaf Products  

The Ministry of Ayush and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued advisories prohibiting the use of ashwagandha leaves in crude, extract, or blended forms. Manufacturers must now reformulate products to comply with the new rules.  

Scientific Concerns  

Studies highlighted that ashwagandha leaves contain higher levels of *Withaferin-A*, a reactive withanolide compound. Experts warned of possible toxicity risks, prompting the shift to root-only usage, which has a stronger safety profile and proven therapeutic benefits.
