India Considers Tariff Cuts and Import Boost to Navigate Trump's Trade Threats

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government is reportedly exploring strategies to mitigate potential trade tensions with the United States following President Donald Trump's recent tariff threats. Sources familiar with the matter indicate that India is considering lowering tariffs on select U.S. goods and increasing imports to address trade imbalances.This move comes in response to Trump's warning of imposing up to 100% tariffs on BRICS nations, including India, if they attempt to reduce reliance on the U.S. dollar in global trade. The Indian Commerce Ministry is said to be identifying products where tariff reductions could be made without compromising national interests.Experts suggest that lowering India's average tariffs from 17% to around 10% could help address some of Trump's concerns while maintaining India's competitive edge in global trade.
