India Fights Back, But Australia A Clinch Pulsating 5-3 Victory

The Indian women's hockey team got their Australian tour underway with a gritty 3-5 defeat to a clinical Australia A outfit at the Perth Hockey Stadium on Saturday. The hosts made an aggressive start, surging ahead to 3-0 within the first 11 minutes from goals by Neasa Flynn, Olivia Downes, and Ruby Harris. Australia A kept going in the second quarter as Tatum Stewart slotted home a penalty corner to make the gap 4-0.

 

India remained resilient despite the initial setback. Mahima Tete scored a goal in the 27th minute, bringing the deficit down to 1-4 at half-time. Kendra Fitzpatrick restored Australia's four-goal lead in the third quarter, but India fought back immediately through vice-captain Navneet Kaur, taking it to 2-5. The last quarter witnessed India mounting pressure, with Lalremsiami scoring in the 50th minute, taking the score to 3-5. India created more opportunities but were unable to break the Australian defense once more.

 

Interestingly, the Indian team played with black armbands to honor the victims of the recent Pahalgam attack, a practice they will be following for the entire duration of the tour. Sunday's match will be next, and India will hope to make a come-back in style.
