India Unveils Massive Food Processing Expansion With 75,000 New Units In Uttar Pradesh

In a landmark move to transform India’s agri-economy, the central government in collaboration with the Uttar Pradesh administration has announced the rollout of 75,000 new food processing units across the state. The initiative, unveiled during World Food India 2025, is designed to modernize the sector, enhance farmer incomes, and strengthen India’s export capabilities.

Currently, Uttar Pradesh hosts around 65,000 food processing units. The new plan will add 1,000 units in each of the state’s 75 districts, effectively doubling its processing infrastructure to 140,000 units. The expansion will focus on fruits, vegetables, and high-value crops, enabling farmers to tap into global markets and reduce post-harvest losses.

Key highlights from the initiative include: 

• The government expects to attract ₹1 trillion in investments through public-private partnerships and policy incentives.
• Major FMCG players such as Reliance, Coca-Cola, Amul, and Olam Foods have signed MoUs worth ₹75,000 crore at World Food India 2025.
• The initiative aligns with the Make in India campaign and will strengthen cold chain logistics, warehousing, and export infrastructure.
• Global demand for Indian processed food is rising, with key markets including the US, UAE, Bangladesh, and Vietnam.
• The Ministry of Food Processing Industries is also focusing on farmer training, digital integration, and market linkages to ensure inclusive growth.
• Uttar Pradesh is being positioned as a national and international sourcing hub for processed food products due to its vast agricultural base and strategic location.
• The expansion is expected to generate large-scale employment and entrepreneurship opportunities in rural and semi-urban areas.
• The initiative supports India’s broader goal of becoming a global leader in food processing and agri-export.
