Indian Railways Pursues Nuclear Power for Greener Train Operations

Indian Railways is taking a bold step towards sustainability by seeking nuclear energy allocation for its operations. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the ministry has approached the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) and the Ministry of Power to source nuclear energy for traction power needs. This initiative aims to reduce dependency on fossil fuels and cut carbon emissions. The move aligns with India's clean energy goals and could significantly lower the railway's carbon footprint. Additionally, Vaishnaw revealed that railways provide an average 46% fare concession to all passengers, with further subsidies for specific categories.
