Indian Stock Market Update: Key Developments on January 31

The Indian stock market is experiencing its longest monthly losing streak in over 23 years, with the Nifty 50 and Sensex dropping around 3% in January alone. Since their peak in September 2024, the indices have fallen 12.6% and 11.7%, respectively, due to weak corporate earnings, foreign outflows, and economic uncertainty. Foreign portfolio investors withdrew $8.3 billion in January, exacerbating the downturn. Mid-cap and small-cap indices also saw declines of 10-15%.

Meanwhile, Religare Enterprises is at the center of a takeover battle. U.S. businessman Digvijay "Danny" Gaekwad has offered ₹275 per share for a 26% stake, a 17% premium over the Burman family’s bid. The Burmans, who already own 25% of Religare, are proceeding with their open offer starting January 27.

Anticipation is building around India’s Union Budget on February 1. Analysts predict income tax cuts, higher subsidies for rural incomes, and capital infusion into state-owned insurers. A rate cut may also be on the horizon as the RBI injects ₹1.5 trillion ($17.39 billion) into the banking system.

Additionally, the government is seeking candidates to replace SEBI chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch, whose term ends on February 28.
