India celebrated its very first Republic Day at the capital's Irwin Amphitheatre, transforming it into a magical 'fairyland' on January 26, 1950. The ceremony commenced with a grand military parade, during which Dr. Rajendra Prasad was sworn in as the nation's first president, and given a 31-gun salute. Iconic buildings sparkled under lights to hail the sovereignty the nation had recently gained. This year, Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto presided over the event, whose forerunner, Sukarno, the country's first president, attended the first ceremony exactly 75 years ago.
