India's Manufacturing Revolution: PLI Schemes Take Aim at China's Dominance

New Delhi, April 9, 2025 – India's Commerce and Industry Minister has emphasized the nation's Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) programs as a pillar of its initiative to break free from Chinese imports. Discussing in an interview with CNN-News18, the minister explained how the incentives will be leveraged to boost local production in strategic sectors such as electronics, renewable energy, and semiconductors. The scheme is a component of India's overall agenda to diversify supply chains and become an increasingly influential manufacturing base.

 

The PLI schemes, launched in 2020 and extended recently, have been at the center of driving investment and creating employment. For example, the newly launched $2.7 billion PLI scheme for electronic components is expected to create over 91,000 direct employment opportunities and attract $7 billion of investments over the next six years. This strategic move is expected to increase domestic value addition in manufacturing and reduce Chinese imports.

 

The minister also highlighted the economic and geopolitical aspects of this transition, stating that decreasing dependence on Chinese imports aligns with India's "Aatmanirbhar Bharat" (self-reliant India) vision. The minister also underlined the fact that while the process will be a gradual one, policy reforms and some incentives are leading to sustainable growth for domestic industries.

 

India's initiatives are coming at a decisive moment as the world's producers increasingly follow a "China plus one" strategy to diversify their production bases. With its young population, low operational costs, and friendly policies, India is well set to be a viable alternative for foreign investments.
