India's Manufacturing Surge: Record E-Way Bills Signal Year-End Push

India's manufacturing and logistics sectors have hit a new high, with e-way bill generation reaching a record 124.5 million in March 2025. This surge, a 20% increase from March last year and an 11.5% rise from February, reflects robust year-end factory dispatches and heightened economic activity. The data, released by GSTN, highlights the momentum in goods movement as businesses rushed to clear inventories before the financial year closed.  

The rise in e-way bills is a leading indicator of increased supply chain activity and macroeconomic stability. Both intra-state and inter-state movements contributed to this growth, with inter-state bills showing a noticeable uptick since September 2024. Experts attribute this trend to improved logistics, stronger demand, and policy changes that tightened compliance norms.  

India's manufacturing PMI for March climbed to 58.1, the highest in eight months, signaling expansion in factory output. Manufacturing gross value added is estimated to have grown by 4.3% in FY25, further underscoring the sector's resilience. The surge in e-way bills also sets the stage for another bumper GST collection, following last year's record ₹2.1 trillion in April.  

This development not only reflects India's industrial strength but also showcases the evolving efficiency and transparency in its logistics ecosystem.
