India's renewable energy future shines bright with four states leading the charge

India's renewable energy potential is concentrated in four key states—Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Karnataka—accounting for over half of the nation's capacity. According to the Energy Statistics India 2025 report by the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation, Rajasthan leads with 20.3% of the total potential, followed by Maharashtra (11.8%), Gujarat (10.5%), and Karnataka (9.8%).

The report highlights India's vast renewable energy capacity, estimated at 21,09,655 megawatts as of March 2024. Wind power dominates with 55% of the potential, followed by solar energy at 36%, and large hydro at 6%. The installed capacity for renewable energy has grown significantly, from 81,593 megawatts in 2015 to 1,98,213 megawatts in 2024, reflecting a compound annual growth rate of 10.36%.

This remarkable growth underscores India's commitment to transitioning to a sustainable energy future, with these four states playing a pivotal role in achieving the nation's renewable energy goals.
