India's Trade Deficit Widens in January, Surpassing Expectations

India's merchandise trade deficit in January 2025 reached $22.99 billion, exceeding the forecasted $22.35 billion. The Ministry of Commerce reported merchandise imports of $59.42 billion and exports of $36.43 billion for the month. This widening trade gap comes despite recent efforts to boost exports and manage imports. The increase in deficit may be attributed to ongoing global economic challenges and fluctuations in commodity prices. While exports showed a modest 3.1% year-on-year growth, imports also rose by 3.0%1. The government continues to focus on export promotion strategies, including targeting key markets and sectors for growth. However, the persistent trade imbalance underscores the need for continued efforts to enhance India's export competitiveness and diversify its trade partnerships.
