ISRO Hosts National Science Meet on Chandrayaan-4 Lunar Sample Return Mission

The Indian Space Research Organisation has organized a national science meet to discuss the scientific potential of lunar samples in the context of the upcoming Chandrayaan-4 mission. The event, held on April 16, brought together around 50 scientists and researchers specializing in meteorite analysis, lunar soil simulants, and remote sensing.  

Chandrayaan-4, scheduled for launch between 2027 and 2028, aims to return lunar samples to Earth, marking a significant milestone in India's space exploration roadmap. The mission is expected to pave the way for India's first human spaceflight to the Moon by 2040.  

During the meet, ISRO officials outlined plans for lunar sample curation and analysis facilities, emphasizing the importance of ground-truth experiments to validate remote sensing observations. Experts also deliberated on scientifically rewarding landing sites and advanced methods for analyzing returned samples.  

M Ganesh Pillai, Scientific Secretary at ISRO, highlighted the mission’s role in shaping India's future lunar exploration efforts. Dr Tirtha Pratim Das, Director of the Science Programme Office, stressed the need for a science-driven approach to maximize the mission’s impact.  

The discussions reinforced India's commitment to advancing lunar research and leveraging space technology for deeper scientific insights. The Chandrayaan-4 mission is expected to contribute significantly to global lunar studies and enhance India's capabilities in planetary exploration.
