IT Rules Strengthen Citizen Power Against Misleading Social Media Content

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of the Republic of India has announced new measures under the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. These rules are designed to empower citizens by providing mechanisms to challenge misleading or harmful content on social media platforms. The initiative reflects the government’s commitment to balancing free speech with accountability in the digital space.  

The IT Rules mandate that publishers of news and current affairs on digital platforms adhere to a Code of Ethics. Additionally, a three-tier grievance redressal mechanism has been established to ensure that violations are addressed promptly. Intermediaries that fail to observe due diligence risk losing their exemption from liability under Section 79 of the IT Act, thereby making them accountable for third-party content.
