Japan's 'Garbage is Gold' Strategy: India Emerges as Key Partner in Waste Management

Japan is making waste management a strategic element of its economic security strategy, with India becoming a key partner. The two countries are deepening their cooperation on green technologies and waste management under schemes such as the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) scheme. The cooperation seeks to step up decarbonization and green investments by leveraging India's opportunity in energy efficiency, green hydrogen, and biogas. Japan's high-tech innovations, including Johkasou decentralized wastewater systems, are being woven into India's waste management infrastructure. The cooperation not only promotes environmental sustainability, but also economic development by opening up new markets and opportunities for investment.
