KV Subramanian Exits IMF Role Early; Government Begins Hunt for Successor

Krishnamurthy V. Subramanian, India's Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), has been recalled by the government six months before his three-year term was due to expire. Subramanian, who took up the position in November 2022 and represented India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan, officially vacated the position as of May 3, with the IMF noting the seat as vacant. The Cabinet Appointments Committee terminated his service with immediate effect, although no official reason was provided.

 

Reports say that Subramanian's indictment of IMF data practices and perceived self-promotion regarding his latest book may have been a reason behind the move. The government has already set the process rolling to replace him in this critical position. Subramanian, who was the former Chief Economic Adviser, is known for his work in ethical wealth creation and economic reforms.
