Laser-Focused: Indian Army Zaps Chinese Drone with DRDO’s New Tech

Indian Army eliminated a China-made drone in the vicinity of the Line of Control (LoC) by using a newly developed laser gun by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). It occurred in the 16 Corps sector, to the south of the Pir Panjal ranges, where Army Air Defence soldiers quickly put into use the Integrated Drone Detection and Interdiction System. This indigenous system, powered by a 2-kilowatt laser beam, which can destroy drones at a range of 800 to 1,000 meters, jammed, spoofed, and ultimately brought down the enemy UAV.

 

The DRDO's laser weapon system, which has been deployed in large numbers indigenously along India's borders, is a major local defence technology breakthrough. India is one of only a handful of nations—now joined by the US, Russia, and China—to operationalize high-powered laser weapons. DRDO is also working on a 30-kilowatt system to counter larger aerial threats, further enhancing India's "Star Wars"-era capability.
