The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) is considering a gradual digital shift for Class 10 and 12 board examinations in the coming years. The move aims to reduce massive paper usage, enhance transparency, and modernize exam processes with technology-driven reforms.
Digital Shift In Maharashtra Board Exams Likely In Future
The MSBSHSE has announced plans to explore digital examinations for SSC and HSC students. Board Chairman Trigun Kulkarni highlighted the enormous paper consumption during exams, noting that the transition to digital formats is inevitable. While the exact model is yet to be finalized, discussions are underway to ensure feasibility and fairness.
Rationale Behind The Digital Transition
For the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) 2026 exams alone, the board used over 10.92 crore pages for question papers and sample answer sheets, along with 1.06 crore answer booklets requiring nearly 1,700 metric tonnes of paper. This scale of consumption underscores the need for sustainable alternatives. Digital exams are expected to reduce environmental impact, cut costs, and streamline logistics.
Pilot Initiatives Already In Place
In February-March 2026, the board successfully tested a GPS-enabled digital lock system in Baramati taluka to secure question paper transport. This pilot project demonstrated how technology can safeguard exam integrity. Additionally, reforms such as issuing a combined marksheet-cum-certificate and revising the name format to align with Aadhaar standards have already been introduced.
Ensuring Exam Integrity
Kulkarni emphasized that 100% CCTV coverage will be mandatory at all exam centres from 2027. Centres without CCTV facilities will lose recognition. During the HSC 2026 exams, 1,983 unfair means cases were reported, with Amravati division recording the highest number. The board also filed 15 FIRs and suspended 100 staff members for misconduct, showing its commitment to curbing malpractice.
Future Outlook
While the digital exam format is still under discussion, the board is also considering AI-assisted online evaluation systems to improve transparency and accuracy. If implemented, teachers could assess digitized answer sheets remotely, reducing human error and speeding up result processing.
