Maritime Moonshot: India's Ambitious Bid for Global Shipping Dominance

India's government has launched Sagarmala 2.0, a grand upgrade of its landmark port-led development program. The program, underpinned by ₹40,000 crore budgetary support, is designed to spur investments totaling ₹12 lakh crore in a decade. The visionary upgrade puts the spotlight on shipbuilding, repair, breaking, and recycling, bridging vital infrastructure chasms in the maritime space. The program takes the success of the initial Sagarmala program to a new level, as the latter has already witnessed 272 completed projects valued at ₹1.41 lakh crore. Sagarmala 2.0 is aligned with India's Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision and aims to place the nation in the world's top five shipbuilding countries and increase port handling capacity to 10 billion metric tons per annum by 2047.
