Marking 40 Years: Centre Reinitiates Dialogue with Assam Agitation Leaders

January 8, 1985, marks the remarkable day when the Indian government took a most crucial step into addressing the prolonged unrest in Assam and revision of proposals in the direction of a lasting settlement.  Resolving to resume negotiation with leaders of the Assam agitation, an agitation that, since its origin, had asked for the detection and deportation of illegal immigrants; these talks became the watershed event that was going to determine the future political structure of Assam. Subsequently, later in the same year, it culminated in the historic Assam Accord. It reminds us today that regional identity and governance is as complex a concept in India.
