Meity Notifies IT Amendment Rules 2026 To Regulate Synthetic Media

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has formally notified the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Amendment Rules, 2026. The amendments mark a significant step in India’s digital governance framework, explicitly bringing synthetic media, including deepfakes, under regulatory oversight. The rules were issued on February 10, 2026, and will come into force on February 20, 2026.
