The Initiative: A Step Towards Green Mobility
The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMMRCL) has tied up with Honda Power Pack Energy India Pvt Ltd to set up e-Swap battery stations at metro and monorail stations. This is part of the city's larger push towards clean energy alternatives and intelligent last-mile connectivity. The first one has already been commissioned at Dahisar East, and the intention is to go to 25 metro stations and six monorail stations.

The Challenge: Pedestrian Congestion Worries
Urban designers and pedestrian safety activists raised fears that these battery-swapping facilities would further clog footpaths under metro stations. Experts say that staircases to mass transit terminals are already congested, and placing the battery-swapping units there may impede foot traffic. They recommend shifting these stations to less crowded spots to prevent disruptions.

The Response: Authorities Defend the Plan
MMMRCL officials have assuaged fears, explaining that e-bike riders will exchange batteries in minutes, causing minimal pedestrian disruption. They highlight that all installations will meet stringent safety, technical, and environmental regulations to guarantee unobstructed access for routine EV users, such as delivery personnel and fleet operators.

The Economic Angle: Revenue and Policy Expansion
The project is likely to fetch MMMOCL ₹30 lakh by way of non-fare revenue. Private players have been allowed under the EV policy to set up battery-swapping centers along Metro Lines 2A and 7. The officials say that this partnership paves the way for future-ready transportation, where battery-swapping is made convenient and rapid at transit points.
