Mills and Energy Sector Face Job Cuts Amid Transition

The energy transition is impacting employment in traditional sectors. The Kinleith Mill in Tokoroa, New Zealand, will cut 230 jobs by the end of June 2025 due to the closure of its paper division. Oji Fibre Solutions cited the unfeasibility of continuing loss-making paper production. Across industries, more than 5,600 employees have already been laid off in January 2025, with companies like Microsoft, Meta, and Salesforce also cutting jobs. BP is also reducing its workforce by 1,000 in Q1 2025 due to the energy transition and cost optimization. While the clean-energy sector is expected to create new jobs, these transitions can be difficult for workers and communities.
