Mind Matters: Supreme Court’s Vision to Redefine Student Wellness

In a landmark initiative, the Supreme Court-appointed National Task Force (NTF) has commenced its mission to address the alarming rise in student suicides and mental health challenges in higher educational institutions. Chaired by former SC judge Justice S. Ravindra Bhat, the NTF aims to identify root causes, evaluate existing policies, and propose actionable solutions to safeguard student well-being.

The formation of the NTF follows a surge in distressing incidents, including the tragic suicides of two IIT Delhi students in 2023. The task force’s first meeting on March 29 outlined plans for broad consultations with students, parents, educators, and mental health experts. A dedicated website and social media platforms will soon be launched to gather public feedback.

The NTF will focus on issues such as academic pressure, caste-based discrimination, and institutional shortcomings. It has been tasked with submitting an interim report within four months and a final report in eight months. Empowered to conduct surprise inspections of educational institutions, the task force seeks to ensure systemic reforms.

This initiative marks a pivotal step toward fostering safer and more inclusive campuses across India, addressing not just mental health but also broader social inequities affecting students.
