Mysore Peta: A Storied Turban's Journey Through Time

The traditional Mysore Peta, once a symbol of royal heritage and official dignity, has largely faded from everyday use in Karnataka. This shift began when the state was renamed from Mysore to Karnataka in 1956. K. Balasubramanyam, then Revenue Commissioner, notably discarded his Mysore Peta, stating, "When there is no Mysore now, why should I continue to wear the Mysore turban?" This action sparked a trend away from the gold-laced turban. Today, the Mysore Peta is primarily seen in portraits of historical figures, during Dasara celebrations, and as a ceremonial accessory for honoring guests at functions.
