Navigating the AI Frontier: Ensuring Progress Without Peril

As nations and corporations speed up their efforts in artificial intelligence, the world's top experts are warning against an uncontrolled technological race that could be existential to humanity. The fast-paced development of AI, especially in military applications, has sparked fears of its misuse and the loss of human control. Yoshua Bengio, an influential AI researcher, stresses that there is a need for global cooperation and regulation so that AI systems continue to be useful and aligned with human values. Similarly, Zhang Hongjiang, the founder of the Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence, calls for AI systems to be transparent and unable to mislead humans. Both experts are stressing that unless checked, the AI race will result in a situation that would lead to unwanted and potentially catastrophic outcomes.
