New Rules, New Realities: Indian H-1B Visa Holders Face Stricter Compliance

The United States has introduced a new immigration rule requiring all noncitizens, including Indian H-1B visa holders, to carry proof of their legal status at all times. This regulation, enforced by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), stems from the Alien Registration Act and aims to enhance national security and public safety.  

Key aspects of the rule include:  
- Mandatory Documentation: All noncitizens aged 18 and older must carry registration proof continuously. Failure to comply could result in fines, imprisonment, or loss of legal status.  
- Biometric Re-registration for Minor: Children of immigrants must re-register and submit fingerprints within 30 days of turning 14.  
- Address Updates: Immigrants must notify authorities of any address changes within ten days to avoid penalties.  

While legal residents, such as H-1B visa holders and green card holders, are considered already registered, they are not exempt from the requirement to carry documentation round the clock. The rule has sparked concerns among immigrant communities, with critics arguing that it adds bureaucratic hurdles and increases anxiety among affected families.
