Investors and traders should take note: both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will be closed on Thursday, May 1, 2025, in observance of Maharashtra Day. This annual holiday commemorates the formation of the state of Maharashtra in 1960 and is marked by official ceremonies and cultural events, especially in Mumbai-the financial capital of India.
All trading activity across equity, equity derivatives, currency derivatives, and securities lending and borrowing (SLB) segments will be suspended for the entire day. The closure applies to both exchanges, impacting millions of market participants nationwide. The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will also be closed for its morning session from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, but will reopen for the evening session, allowing trading in commodities like gold, silver, and crude oil.
This holiday is one of 14 scheduled stock market holidays for 2025, and regular trading will resume on Friday, May 2. Market participants are advised to adjust their trading strategies, settlement obligations, and portfolio management plans accordingly to avoid any last-minute disruptions.
