Air India Grounds Gulf Routes—Flights Diverted as Tensions Take Off

In a sweeping operational move, Air India announced  the immediate halt of all Middle Eastern flights as well as flights to/from North America's East Coast and Europe for safety considerations in the context of escalating geopolitical turmoil. In addition, North America-bound flights to India are being redirected to their point of origin or alternatively routed to India.
 
1. What's Happening?
  • Air India suspended its flights to the Middle East, including routes that normally go through or close to Iranian and Iraqi airspace.
  • The flights affected include New York, Washington D.C., Toronto, and London flights.
  • Some of the North America-bound India-bound flights have been rerouted back to their cities of origin mid-flight or re-directed to other Indian airports.
2. Why the Sudden Halt?
  • The action comes after Iranian airspace was closed and increased military activity in the Gulf area.
  • Air India said the move had been taken "in view of the safety of our passengers" and in consultation with independent security analysts.
  • Air India has already been bypassing overflights of Iran, Iraq, and Israel, and is now extending its no-fly zones into sections of the Persian Gulf
3. Passenger Impact & Contingency Plans
  • Passengers on the affected flights are being re-booked, offered full refunds, or rescheduled at no cost.
  • A portion of the flights is also being rerouted via Mongolian airspace or making refuelling stops. at Vienna or Indian cities to bypass the restricted areas.
  • Air India has also cut frequencies on certain long-haul routes until July 15, 2025, as part of a broader operational readjustment.
