First Step Forward: 16% of Dharavi Homes Qualify for Redevelopment

The first survey for the Dharavi Redevelopment Project has brought some surprising numbers. Out of 505 homes surveyed in Meghwadi, just 81 have made the cut for new houses under the scheme. That’s only about 16 percent, leaving a lot of families wondering what comes next.

Here’s what’s going on:

The main reason so many homes didn’t qualify is paperwork. Many residents couldn’t show documents like electricity bills, Aadhaar cards, or property papers that prove they’ve been living there long enough.

If you were marked ineligible, you’re not out of options yet. There’s a window until July 5 to submit any missing documents or appeal the decision.

For those who still don’t qualify after the review, the government is looking at other places to relocate them, including areas like Deonar, Aksa, Mulund, and a few others.

A lot of people are frustrated, especially families who have lived in Dharavi for generations but don’t have the paperwork to show for it. There’s confusion about the rules and what counts as proof.

The survey is just the first step. More surveys are coming for other parts of Dharavi, so this isn’t the final word on who gets a new home.

The Slum Rehabilitation Authority is in charge of checking all the documents and making the final decisions.

This situation really shows how tricky it can be to match official requirements with the lives of people who’ve been part of a community for decades.
