At a lecture in Osmania University this weekend, Chief Justice of India B R Gavai spoke about why Dr Ambedkar’s vision for the Constitution still matters today. Calling it India’s moral compass, he said the document has helped the country stay united through war, peace, and political change.

What Gavai Highlighted
  • Ambedkar’s idea of “One Nation, One Constitution” was key to building a strong, unified India
  • Article 32, which lets citizens directly approach the Supreme Court when their rights are violated, was called the “heart and soul” of the Constitution
  • Gavai stressed that rights mean little without remedies—and that’s why judicial access is so important
  • He also defended the Directive Principles of State Policy, saying they guide lawmakers toward justice, even if they aren’t enforceable in court
Why It Still Matters
  • The Constitution has adapted over time through amendments, showing its flexibility
  • Despite early criticism, it’s lasted 75 years and continues to protect democratic values
  • Gavai urged law students to focus on building strong legal foundations in India rather than chasing foreign degrees
A Tribute to Ambedkar
  • The event included the release of a commemorative postal cover and 22 picture postcards inspired by the Constitution’s art and calligraphy
  • Judges from Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra attended, along with legal scholars and students
  • Justice Sujoy Paul reminded the audience that a Constitution is only as strong as the people who uphold it
