India’s defence manufacturing capabilities have taken a major leap with the indigenous production of the AK-203 assault rifle, now rolling out from the Korwa Ordnance Factory in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh. Under a ₹5,200 crore Indo-Russian joint venture, the AK-203—nicknamed ‘Sher’—is set to become the primary assault rifle for Indian armed forces, replacing the decades-old INSAS rifles.
