Anil Ambani’s Reliance Defence has inked a strategic partnership with German defence giant Rheinmetall AG to jointly manufacture and supply artillery shells and explosives, marking a major leap for India’s private defence sector. The agreement, announced on May 22, 2025, will see the establishment of a state-of-the-art greenfield manufacturing facility in the Watad Industrial Area of Ratnagiri, Maharashtra.
 
Key Highlights:
  • Strategic Collaboration: The partnership focuses on the supply of explosives and propellants for medium and large-calibre ammunition, with Reliance Defence providing Rheinmetall with critical components for its global portfolio.
  • Mega Manufacturing Hub: The upcoming facility will be one of South Asia’s largest, boasting an annual capacity of 200,000 artillery shells, 10,000 tonnes of explosives, and 2,000 tonnes of propellants. This aligns with Reliance’s vision to be among India’s top three defence exporters.
  • Boost to ‘Make in India’: The collaboration is a significant step under the government’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives, aiming to position India as a global defence manufacturing powerhouse and support the country’s ambitious defence export target of Rs 50,000 crore by 2029.
  • Joint Marketing & Future Growth: Both companies will engage in joint marketing activities for select products and may expand their cooperation as new opportunities arise.
