A social media travel vlogger Shenaz Treasury's hit video has raised once again the issue of India's astronomical urban rents with her claim that it is cheaper to rent a Bali villa with its own garden and pool than to rent her modest 1BHK flat in Mumbai. Treasury's trip juxtaposes her modest Mumbai flat with her friend's spacious Bali villa, just 10 minutes from the beach, with open green spaces, modern amenities, and its own pool.
She notes that for the same—or even lower—monthly rent, digital nomads and expats in Bali enjoy a higher standard of living, affordable meals, massage, and vibrant wellness culture in the midst of nature. The post has provoked as much awe as anger on social media, with some urging her to leave for Bali and others warning that increasing demand may well push prices there up too in the near future.
As rental rates in Mumbai continue to be among the highest in the country, Treasury's benchmark is inspiring new debate about lifestyle, telecommuting, and the international search for affordable luxury.
