Reliance Power Ltd, in a historic initiative, has made a capital expenditure of up to ₹20 billion for a revolutionary renewable energy drive in Bhutan, the biggest foreign direct investment (FDI) by an Indian firm in the nation's green industry. This ambitious project, in association with Druk Holding and Investments Ltd (DHI)-the business wing of the Royal Government of Bhutan-will witness the establishment of a gigantic 500 MW solar power project in Gelephu Mindfulness City, as well as a 770 MW run-of-the-river hydropower project.

Key Highlights:

Mega Solar Project: The 500 MW solar power plant will be the largest in Bhutan, in two phases of 250 MW each in the next two years. Land has been identified, and technical teams are already undertaking site studies and feasibility studies.

Strategic Partnerships: Reliance Power has executed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) and a commercial term sheet with Green Digital Private Limited, Bhutan, in place for the commercial structure of the project.

SO:SO Joint Venture: The ventures will be done in a special purpose joint venture by Reliance Power and DHI based on the expertise of both companies in green energy as well as infrastructure.

Hydropower Expansion: The 770 MW Chamkharchhu-1 hydro project will considerably increase Bhutan's present installed power capacity of 2,452 MW, helping drive the country's net-zero aspirations.

Smart Infrastructure: Apart from generation, Reliance will also introduce smart distribution as well as metering systems, updating Bhutan's energy infrastructure.

Economic & Social Impact: The project is anticipated to promote economic development, generate employment, and be in harmony with Bhutan's Gross National Happiness Index, with its focus on sustainable development and well-being.

This ambitious foray not only makes Reliance Power a South Asian renewable energy leader but also reiterates India's dedication to regional climate action and sustainability.
