Maharashtra has announced a landmark reduction in electricity tariffs, offering relief to millions of consumers across the state. For the first time ever, power rates will go down instead of up, with a phased plan that promises significant savings for households, businesses, and farmers.

Key Highlights:
  • The state government will cut electricity tariffs by 26% over the next five years, starting with an immediate 10% reduction in FY 2026. This is the first such rate cut in Maharashtra’s history.
  • The biggest winners are residential users who consume less than 100 units per month—nearly 70% of all consumers in the state. These households will see their bills drop by 10% right away, with further reductions in the years ahead.
  • The tariff cut will benefit all categories: domestic, commercial, and industrial users. Over 45 lakh farmers will also see lower electricity costs, especially with the rollout of solar energy initiatives for agriculture.
  • The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) approved the plan after the state electricity board (MSEDCL) petitioned for a reduction, breaking the trend of annual hikes.
  • Additional discounts are available for households with smart meters, who can get an extra 10% off for using electricity during the day. Those generating solar power at home will also receive incentives.
The state is investing heavily in renewable energy, aiming for 31,000 MW of green power by 2030. This shift is expected to save ₹66,000 crore in procurement costs and help keep tariffs low.
The new rates do not apply to Mumbai, which has separate power providers.

Officials assure that tariffs will not increase for the next five years, giving consumers long-term financial relief and predictability.
