The Government of India has made a significant healthcare announcement to set up more than 200 Day Care Cancer Centres (DCCCs) nationwide in the financial year 2025-26. The ambitious project is intended to increase the reach and affordability of cancer treatment, particularly in rural and underserved areas, taking the basic cancer services to the doorstep of patients.
Major Highlights of the Day Care Cancer Centres Programme
Nationwide Coverage: The centres will be established in over 750 district hospitals, with priority given to high-burden cancer districts according to Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) cancer registry data, for strategic placement where need is highest.
Comprehensive Services: Outpatient chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and daycare activities for various types of cancer will be offered through these DCCCs, minimizing hospitalization for extended periods and travel to urban tertiary care facilities.
Emphasis on Accessibility and Affordability: With the decentralization of cancer treatment, the government focuses on economically weaker sections, reducing the physical, emotional, and financial burden for patients and their families.
Support for Screening and Awareness: The program also encompasses cancer prevention interventions and strong screening activities, targeting prevalent cancers like breast, cervical, oral, and lung cancers.
Substantial Funding: The estimated total outlay on the creation and running of these centres over the next three years is about ₹3,200 crore, indicating a firm financial commitment.
Policy and Healthcare Integration: The programme is aligned with the overall National Cancer Control Programme and synergizes with other health reforms, such as customs duty waiver on 36 life-saving cancer medications for reducing the cost of treatment.
