Cartier is under fire after denying Indian star Diljit Dosanjh's request to wear the historic Maharaja of Patiala's necklace to the 2025 Met Gala, despite having lent American influencer Emma Chamberlain a choker made from the same piece in 2022. Dosanjh, who paid homage to his Punjabi heritage with a regal ensemble inspired by the Maharaja, was told by Cartier that the necklace is "sealed in a museum and unavailable for loan." Social media erupted, labeling the brand as double-faced and culturally insensitive, and questioning why a Western YouTuber had been permitted to borrow the colonial-era family heirloom but a Punjabi artist would not. The move was condemned by supporters as an act of racial discrimination and wiping out Indian heritage on the global stage. The scandal has revived debates regarding cultural ownership and colonial artifacts' legacy.
