Kolkata braces for a bout of severe weather on Friday as the Met Office has forecast intense thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and squally winds. Residents are advised to take all necessary precautions to minimize disruption and ensure safety, as several low-lying and traffic-prone areas may experience waterlogging.
Key Highlights on Kolkata’s Weather Alert
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Kolkata and surrounding districts, citing the likelihood of widespread heavy showers, thunder, and gusty winds reaching 40–50 km/h throughout Friday’s afternoon and evening hours.
According to meteorologists, the severe weather pattern is linked to a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal, which is pulling in moisture-laden winds and creating an unstable atmosphere conducive to intense convective activity and cloudbursts.
The IMD warns of potential waterlogging in low-lying residential and market areas, along with hazardous traffic conditions due to poor visibility and slippery roads. Municipal authorities have been asked to remain on standby for emergency dewatering and tree-clearing operations.
Citizens are urged to avoid unnecessary outdoor travel, secure loose objects on rooftops and balconies, and remain updated via official channels. Fishermen have been specifically advised against venturing into the coastal waters until the system clears.
Local disaster management teams and Kolkata Police are coordinating with the civic bodies to ensure quick response to power outages, fallen trees, and stranded vehicles, particularly in known waterlogging hotspots like Tollygunge, Lake Town, and Behala.
Health experts recommend carrying umbrellas, rain gear, and drinking water while out. Those with respiratory conditions should avoid direct exposure to storm winds and seek shelter promptly.
