Ahmedabad’s Rath Yatra is always a massive event, but this year, the city is taking festival safety to a whole new level with artificial intelligence. If you’re planning to join the crowds, here’s how the police are using tech to keep everyone safe.
Key Highlights:
For the first time, Ahmedabad police are using AI to watch over the entire 16-kilometer procession route. The system analyzes live feeds from more than 300 CCTV cameras and 75 drones, looking for crowded spots and even fire hazards. If anything risky pops up, the command center gets an instant alert.
Police officers are getting a digital leg up, too. They’re using AR and VR to train for the event, virtually walking the route and reviewing past years’ footage so they know exactly what to expect and how to respond.
One of the biggest worries at crowded festivals is stampedes. The new AI system uses thermal imaging and pixel counting to measure how packed each area gets. If things look too tight, officers can step in before it becomes dangerous.
Security will be everywhere—over 23,800 personnel are on duty, including special forces and local police. There are also thousands of body cameras, dozens of drones, watchtowers, and rooftop checkpoints, all feeding data back to the control room.
The city isn’t just watching from above. They’ve flagged old buildings along the route, put up barricades, and set up assistance centers and public address systems to help guide the 1.5 million expected devotees.
Fire safety is also a priority. The AI can spot fire risks right away, so emergency teams can jump into action if needed.
All in all, Ahmedabad’s Rath Yatra 2025 is shaping up to be one of the safest and most high-tech festivals in India, showing how smart use of technology can make a real difference at big public events.
