India has unveiled its first AI‑powered Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) along the 56.46 km stretch of the Dwarka Expressway and adjacent NH‑48, deploying smart surveillance and real‑time enforcement tools to improve safety, reduce violations, and set a national benchmark.

System Features And Technology Integration

* The ATMS integrates over 110 high‑resolution PTZ traffic cameras at roughly one‑kilometre intervals for continuous monitoring
* Video incident detection and enforcement systems can detect around 14 traffic violations including overspeeding, no seatbelt, and triple riding
* Vehicle‑actuated speed display boards and variable message signboards alert drivers in real time
* A central command control room processes data and coordinates swift responses during incidents such as accidents, fog, roadblocks or animal intrusion

Enforcement And Public Safety

* The system is linked to the NIC e‑challan portal, automatically forwarding violations to police authorities for fines
* Real‑time incident detection cuts down response times and aids quicker emergency dispatch
* Public awareness campaigns will run alongside technological enforcement to promote safer driving habits
* The ATMS meets NHAI’s 2023 smart road guidelines and is being implemented by NHAI and IHMCL

Coverage And Operational Reach

* The infrastructure spans 56.46 km, covering the full length of the Dwarka Expressway and a 28 km segment of NH‑48 between Shiv Murti and Kherki Daula
* The project makes the corridor a model high‑tech highway aiming for national rollout in future stretches

Impact And Future Road Safety Vision

* The intelligent system ensures shorter delays, reduced congestion, and a safer commuting environment
* It is being hailed as a national template for AI‑based traffic governance and intelligent road safety
* The rollout marks a significant milestone in India’s broader push towards smart infrastructure and digital highways

About NHAI And IHMCL
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), together with Indian Highways Management Company Ltd (IHMCL), is spearheading the national rollout of smart highways under its 2023 smart road initiative to modernise traffic management and enhance road safety across the country
