Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport faced major disruptions on Wednesday, with around 140 flights cancelled in the wake of India’s military strikes on terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir under Operation Sindoor. The sudden escalation in regional tensions led to widespread airspace restrictions, impacting both domestic and international travel.

Key Highlights:
  • Mass Cancellations: Altogether, 140 flights were cancelled-65 arrivals and 66 departures-in addition to two international arrivals and two international departures. Some foreign carriers, such as American Airlines, were impacted, with at least four international departures cancelled since midnight.
  • Airspace Restrictions: The cancellations were a result of shifting airspace conditions after Indian military forces attacked nine terror targets. Flight tracking information indicated a significant lack of civilian aircraft activity north of Delhi, particularly around sensitive border airports.
  • Greater Impact: Carriers such as IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet, and Akasa Air cancelled or suspended flights to and from major northern cities like Srinagar, Jammu, Amritsar, Leh, and Chandigarh until May 10. Passengers were given full refunds or free rescheduling.
  • Passenger Advisory: Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) requested passengers to contact their airlines for updates and alternative travel arrangements, as attempts are ongoing with Air Traffic Control to limit further disruptions.
  • Continuing Uncertainty: With more than 1,300 flights normally managed per day, the airport is striving to regain normalcy amidst continuing geopolitical uncertainty and possibility of further airspace modifications.
Passengers are asked to remain vigilant for updates as developments occur.
