The Delhi government will introduce a path-breaking scheme on International Women's Day, March 8. The Mahila Samriddhi Scheme will provide Rs 2,500 per month financial assistance to eligible women, which could benefit 15-20 lakh residents.
The major eligibility conditions are:
* Age: 18-60 years
* Household income: Less than Rs 3 lakh per year
* Delhi residency: At least 3 years
* Not being employed in government jobs or getting other financial support
Registration will be made through an online portal, with Aadhaar-linked authentication. The scheme is aimed at empowering economically weaker women, a key pre-poll promise. Documents like income certificates and bank statements are to be provided by applicants. The government wants to use the data of various departments to ensure eligibility and deter misuse. The move is a big step towards financial independence for women in the capital.
