Heavy monsoon showers have battered major Indian metros, leaving Delhi NCR, Kolkata, and Chennai grappling with severe waterlogging, traffic snarls, and civic breakdowns. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued rainfall across these regions till July 17, with no immediate relief in sight.

Delhi NCR:
Gurugram recorded 133 mm of rain, triggering road caveins and electrocution incidents that claimed multiple lives.
Waterlogging disrupted traffic across Noida, Ghaziabad, and Delhi, with over 222 vehicles breaking down and underpasses submerged.
The Delhi government issued workfromhome advisories and deployed pumps to clear flooded streets.

Kolkata:
Continuous downpour submerged key areas like Behala, Ballygunge, and Ultadanga, with kneedeep water reported in several localities.
Metro construction near VIP Road worsened flooding, while public transport faced widespread delays.
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation deployed suction trucks, but commuters struggled with surge pricing and limited mobility.

Chennai:
  • Though less severe than Delhi and Kolkata, parts of Chennai saw localized flooding in lowlying zones like T. Nagar and Velachery.
  • Traffic slowed across arterial roads, and civic teams were mobilized to clear clogged drains.
Nationwide impact:
  • IMD has issued alerts for heavy rainfall across central and eastern India, including West Bengal, Odisha, and Uttar Pradesh.
  • Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal till July 16.
As monsoon intensity builds, urban infrastructure across India is once again under pressure, exposing longstanding gaps in drainage and disaster preparedness.
