Mumbai’s leading food delivery platforms-Zomato, Swiggy, and Zepto-are under intense scrutiny after Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Akhil Chitre urged Mumbai Police to crack down on crimes involving delivery agents. The party flagged rising incidents of impersonation, traffic violations, and even serious crimes by unscreened delivery workers, citing cases of fraud and violence. Chitre demanded registration, mandatory background checks, uniforms, and ID cards for all delivery staff to maintain public safety. These demands have formally been made to the Joint Commissioner of Police by a delegation, warning that uncontrolled recruitment by aggregators is endangering citizens. The call for regulation happens against the backdrop of rising complaints by people living in Mumbai and high-profile crashes that have given rise to safety and accountability fears in the booming gig economy.
