India’s telecom sector continues its remarkable growth story, welcoming over 3 million new phone users in April 2025 and pushing the nation’s total mobile subscriber base to a staggering 1.16 billion. The latest TRAI data highlights that Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are powering this expansion, even as rivals like Vodafone Idea (Vi) and BSNL struggle with subscriber losses.

Key Highlights:
  • India added 3.05 million new telephone subscribers in April 2025, with wireless (mobile) users accounting for 2.68 million of the increase. The total wireless subscriber count now stands at 1,166.43 million, up from 1,163.76 million in March—a monthly growth rate of 0.23%.
  • Reliance Jio led the charge, adding 2.64 million new users and solidifying its position as the country’s largest telecom operator with 472.4 million subscribers. Airtel followed by gaining 170,658 new users, maintaining a high active user rate of nearly 99%.
  • In contrast, Vodafone Idea lost 647,620 subscribers, and BSNL shed 155,000, highlighting the competitive divide in India’s telecom landscape.
  • The number of 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) subscribers also saw a jump, reaching 7.5 million, with Jio accounting for over 6.1 million of these next-gen connections.
Urban tele-density remains high at 131.46%, while rural tele-density is at 59.26%, reflecting ongoing efforts to bridge the digital divide.
India’s total broadband subscribers now exceed 943 million, with 92.3% of mobile connections classified as broadband-capable.

With digital adoption accelerating and 5G expansion underway, India’s mobile user base is set to scale even greater heights in the coming months.
