Marking four years of PM Gati Shakti, Minister Piyush Goyal hailed it as a transformative infrastructure initiative that revolutionized project execution with integrated digital planning, seamless coordination across ministries and states, reduced logistics costs, and a sustainability focus, powering India’s journey to a Viksit Bharat.
The PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan (NMP), launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in October 2021, completed four years, with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal extolling its impact on India’s infrastructure ecosystem. The initiative has seamlessly integrated ministries, states, and sectors on a single digital platform, switching India’s infrastructure planning from siloed to synergized execution.
Key Highlights:
PM Gati Shakti is a game-changer in accelerating project delivery speed by breaking departmental silos and enabling real-time coordinated planning and execution of infrastructure projects through geospatial digital tools.
The platform has onboarded 58 ministries/departments and all 36 states and union territories, integrating over 1,600 data layers to empower synchronized multi-modal connectivity development.
Improved logistical efficiency through PM Gati Shakti’s integrated approach has reduced national logistics costs to 7.8-8.9% of GDP, down from earlier estimates of 13-14%, positioning India closer to global benchmarks of 6-8%.
The initiative promotes sustainability by encouraging green infrastructure and aligns project execution with India’s Net Zero 2070 targets, emphasizing eco-friendly and energy-efficient construction methods.
PM Gati Shakti has broadened its impact to social sector infrastructure like schools, hospitals, and tribal areas via geospatial applications, ensuring inclusive growth reaching the remotest regions.
State Master Plans under PM Gati Shakti facilitate targeted regional development, with 533 state projects mapped on the platform, optimizing state capital investment and infrastructure planning.
Capacity building through extensive training programs has empowered over 20,000 government officials to effectively use the GIS-based PM Gati Shakti tools for efficient project management.
Positive outcomes include speeding up stalled projects, better last-mile connectivity, increased economic growth, and improvement in India’s ranking on the World Bank Logistics Performance Index (from 44th to 38th).
The digital platform fosters transparency and accountability by enabling real-time monitoring, reducing delays and cost overruns in infrastructure upgrades.
Plans are underway to extend PM Gati Shakti’s benefits to district levels and explore international collaborations, making the initiative a cornerstone in India’s vision of a developed and sustainable infrastructure network.
Through PM Gati Shakti, India is witnessing a paradigm shift in how infrastructure projects are conceived, planned, and executed—bringing speed, synergy, and sustainability front and center on the path to a Viksit Bharat.
