The French Navy's "Clemenceau 25" operation has made headlines after its official mission map declared Morocco's internationally disputed Western Sahara as part of the nation. The map revision follows a historic decision in October 2024, when the French Foreign Ministry updated its North Africa map to include the Sahara within Morocco. The new image is in line with France's recent diplomatic stance, reasserted by President Emmanuel Macron, in support of Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara. Macron openly stated that "the present and future of Western Sahara lie within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty," a position reiterated on his state visit to Rabat and in official correspondence with King Mohammed VI.
This shift comes in the broader international recognition, including simultaneous updates from the CIA and support by Spain, as there is mounting evidence for Morocco's own initiative of autonomy over the territory. This French Navy map is as much a diplomatic statement as it is an operational update in keeping with France's shifting foreign policy.
