There is a revolution going on in Indian school classrooms as coding is being made a part of school curriculum. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has pushed schools across the country to implement coding and computational thinking from Class 6, preparing the students for the future to be technology-ready.
Key Highlights:
• Curriculum Integration: Coding is now made mandatory in the majority of CBSE, ICSE, and state board schools, and languages like Python, Scratch, and JavaScript are also taught alongside traditional subjects.
• Skill Development: Not only are the students coding, but they are also problem-solving, thinking logically, and creatively through project-based learning, robotics, and hackathons.
• Teacher Training: Mass upskilling efforts are in progress, where teachers are being trained in coding pedagogy and technology.
• EdTech Partnerships: WhiteHat Jr, Byju's, and Code.org are collaborating with schools to provide interactive coding content and websites.
• Equity Focus: Efforts to bridge the digital divide are underway, with government subsidies and NGO assistance introducing coding labs to rural and disadvantaged schools.
Prospects: With coding as the new literacy, India's next generation is being empowered with the skills necessary to compete in the global digital economy and drive innovation and entrepreneurship from the classroom level itself.
