The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has put out a series of yellow and orange alerts for Delhi, urging residents to prepare for three days of wild weather featuring thunderstorms, rain, and strong winds that could hit speeds of up to 70 km/h. These alerts will be in effect from Wednesday to Friday, indicating that conditions are ramping up as the city approaches the pre-monsoon season.
The most severe weather is anticipated on Thursday, May 30, when wind speeds might briefly spike to 70 km/h during thundersqualls. The IMD is advising people to stay indoors during the worst of the weather, secure any loose items outside, and steer clear of trees when lightning strikes. Throughout this period, we can expect light to moderate rainfall, partly cloudy skies, and frequent thunderstorms, with maximum temperatures hovering around 38–40°C—just a bit below the usual for this time of year.
Delhi has already experienced its wettest May on record, with 186.4 mm of rain so far, breaking the previous record of 165 mm set back in 2008. The IMD cautions that the mix of rain, wind, and lightning could lead to localized issues, such as waterlogging, minor property damage, and traffic delays.
Authorities are on high alert, with emergency services ready to respond quickly. Residents are encouraged to keep an eye on weather updates and to be cautious during times of high winds and lightning.
